Born in St. Louis, she relocated in New York City at the age of only a few days. In 1991, Barnard College granted her an Arts History degree. The same year, she was hired as an intern at An American Place restaurant for one year. Guarnaschelli began her culinary career in the kitchen watching mom, who was editing cookbooks and test a variety of recipes. Following her time at Larry Forgione in New York as well as France, Los Angeles she also worked at Guy Savoy's La Butte Chaillot. She ended up as the chef in charge at Butter. Guarnaschelli participated in the 2007 Farmers Market Battle, a segment of Food Network's Iron Chef America, where she took on Cat Cora. In addition to her role as a Judge on the Program, in 2011 she participated in the show's fourth season in which she came third. She was a contestant and won in an episode of the Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast.
